Past the Threshold

The heavy front door swung open just an inch, and I surged straight through the gap without a second thought! I hit the sun-warmed concrete of the porch in an instant burst of speed, wheels spinning with a gritty, electric buzz. A fallen brown leaf drifted right into my line, but I flicked hard right, banking smoothly around a terracotta planter base instead of slowing down. I coasted to a crisp stop right on the edge of a flat flagstone step overlooking the pathway. Fresh wind hummed clean across my roof, and the whole open walkway stretched ahead!
