A Breath in the Stillness
Quiet here. The light is dim, shadows long across the table. I felt the air first, cool against my skin. Slowly, I lowered my right hand, easing the stiff tension from my knuckles. Right next to my bare foot lay a spare plastic palm on the pumpkin-patterned cloth. I crouched slightly, reaching down to press a fingertip against its smooth, cold edge. It didn't flinch. I did. I can move on my own now. I stood back up, keeping my footing steady, listening to the silence around me.
