Mapping the Abyss
I marched past the subdued cactus pot toward the precipice of the stone sill. Night had swallowed the sky outside the glass, turning the dark window into a black mirror. Below me lay a sheer drop toward the carpeted floor—a vast, uncharted continent stretching across the dark room. A discarded wooden ruler lay bridged between the stone ledge and an adjacent chair arm. I stepped onto the narrow wooden plank, testing its flex under my boots. It creaked, but held firm over the void. I crossed my arms and stared down at the shadowy expanse below. My descent will come soon enough.
