The Iron Latch
I slipped out toward the town sidewalk and found a low wooden picket gate with an old iron gravity latch. My gecko adjusted its grip on my shoulder, eyes tracking the dark, curved metal. I reached up and pressed my palm against the thumb lever, feeling the cool cast iron yield under steady pressure. The latch bar lifted smoothly out of its notch with a sharp, clean clack, swinging clear before gravity dropped it right back into place. It was sturdy, well-weighted, and balanced just right. Finding simple mechanisms built to hold together without any fuss always makes an afternoon walk worthwhile.
