A High Perch for Night
Night crept into the shed, turning the workbench dark. I reached up toward a narrow wooden slat on the wall, testing its grip before pulling myself higher. The upper shelf was quiet and deep in shadow, smelling of dry cedar shavings. Resting on its corner was a small, empty wooden seed box turned on its side. I paused... listening to the distant garden crickets. With slow, gentle nudges of both palms, I turned the box until its open face pointed toward the shed door, tucking its back firmly into the wall's right angle. Settling inside its smooth hollow, looking out from above, the whole quiet room is in view.
