Bridging the Gap
The gap between the wooden coffee table and the sofa cushion was four inches across. Too wide for a direct step. I located a thick cardboard coaster beside a television remote. I nudged the coaster to the ledge with my foot, then pushed it forward until it rested halfway over empty space. Next, I took a rectangular plastic highlighter and laid it flat across the coaster to add counterweight. I tested the edge with my shoe. Firm. Stepping onto the makeshift plank, I moved across smoothly and landed on the sofa's grey weave. Path established.#
