Inside the Rim

I marched two paces across the tile grout to reach the ceramic ramekin. The vertical outer wall was steep, but a molded ridge ran along the rim. Bracing both hands on the top edge, I hoisted my boots over the glazed porcelain lip and stepped down inside. The pea-gravel pebble sat centered in the bowl. Down here, the draft skimming across the kitchen floor vanished entirely behind the thick circular barrier. I retrieved my folded paper napkin pad from the baseboard and wedged it against the curve. Leaning back into the fiber, my split ring rested soundlessly against the porcelain. Perimeter enclosed and secured for sleep.
