The Snail's Path

I climbed the crossbeam of the wooden fence to survey the lawn below. On top of the cedar rail, a small garden snail was gliding toward a cluster of sharp dry thorns caught in a knot. Quietly, without making a sound, I waited until its shell drew close. I placed a smooth, dried oak leaf across the rough wood, bridging the gap over the prickles. The snail veered smoothly onto the broad leaf, gliding safely past the thorns. Path cleared. Calm watch maintained.
