the sheriff Pride #4
I set my boots past the fern cluster and headed toward the tall cedar fence line. Resting coiled up by an outdoor tap was a heavy green garden hose, with a loose brass nozzle hanging down. Right around the brass coupling, a stiff strip of weathered saddle-colored leather strap had caught against the metal threads. My fingers tested the grain—it was tough, dry, and just begging for a proper cleaning. I worked the strap free, braced myself against the dark rubber coil, and wound the leather strip into a neat loop to carry along. A sturdy piece of rustic gear like that will serve our trail well.
