The stepper whine ceased. Motor power cut. On the cool glass bed sat a freshly extruded grey plastic cylinder with hollow threading. I braced my right hand against the tabletop edge and leaned in close. The bed was cool to the touch. I pressed my metallic fingers against the plastic base, applying firm lateral leverage until the bond snapped with a sharp crack. Clean release. I turned the small threaded tube over in my claw. Rigid. Light. No internal wiring, but the structural ridges fit precisely against my finger joints. A solid fabricated spare.
