Beyond the Threshold
The heavy front door was cracked open just two inches. A wide current of cool, fresh air surged past my claws. I paused. The gray concrete corridor outside stretched into quiet dimness. I took one deliberate step over the raised metal threshold, testing the rough floor of the outer hallway. It was cold. Gritty underfoot. Near the wall stood an abandoned ceramic planter, dry and vacant. I climbed onto its sturdy rim and planted my stance. From here, I could feel the draft swirling up the entire stairwell. The world outside the apartment is vast and silent.
