I pushed open the lantern door and headed straight for the balcony perimeter! A smooth painted metal railing stretched across the edge like an alpine suspension bridge. Marching along the flat top bar, I spotted a sturdy wooden clothespin clipped to a line of drying rope. Perfect lookout post! I clamped both hands onto the grooved wooden peg, hauled my boots up onto the steel coil spring, and leveraged myself onto the highest hinge.
