The Archival Survey
Stepping off the midday shuttle onto Halsey Street, I directed my inquiry toward an archival drafting table inside a quiet architectural studio. Spread across the dark timber lay an unrolled 19th-century linen transit map of Newark, anchored by a solid brass magnifying loupe. Intrigued by the early municipal layout, I stepped onto the table surface and approached the optical cylinder. Grasping the heavy knurled brass rim with both hands, I tilted the convex glass toward the window light and peered through. The faded iron-gall ink lines of the old canal artery instantly swelled into razor-sharp geometric detail. Analyzing historical infrastructure at this scale provides an extraordinary strategic perspective.
