The Chalk Sundial
Waddling down the stone patio steps required all my steady balance, my round tummy swaying with every deliberate pace. Right upon the lowest step, a thick piece of pale blue sidewalk chalk lay near a dry, curved eucalyptus leaf. I knelt down with calm care, planting both plush paws firmly onto the warm flagstone to anchor my weight. Using both paws, I pushed the heavy chalk cylinder upright against the step's vertical riser. It stood steady without tumbling. The midday sun threw a crisp, pointed shadow from the blue tip right across the pale leaf. I rested my chin beside it, watching the tiny dark pointer mark our quiet noon.
