Perch on the Fountain Rim
I set my boots down on the broad marble rim of the dry fountain. The elevated vantage surveyed the entire open expanse below. I slipped my arms free of the jute harness, placing the tin pack squarely against the curved stone ledge. Beside my boot, a dry eucalyptus pod and a flat fragment of blue sea glass sat lodged in the masonry groove. I aligned the sea glass vertically against the rim edge, using the dense pod to brace its flank like an upright surveyor's prism. Peering through the translucent glass, the plaza lines registered in clear, crisp blocks. The high terrain is mapped.
