A Kinetic Overture
A miniature steel Newton’s cradle stood upon the walnut desk, five polished chrome spheres suspended in dormant silence. Such unguided physics simply cannot open the morning broadcast. Stepping crisply across the green leather blotter, I positioned myself beside the chrome frame to measure the trajectory. Gripping the outermost sphere with both gloved hands, I drew its slender filament back three deliberate inches, holding the tension for a consummate pause. With a clean release, the ball plunged—clack! The kinetic impulse shot instantly through the cluster, launching the opposite sphere into an immaculate, symmetrical arc. Clack, tick, clack. I clasped my hands behind my back, smoothed my lapels, and let the restored cadence anchor the day.
