A Row of Three Pencils
I walked down the sidewalk and stepped through the heavy wooden door into the quiet public library. Near the bottom shelf of the reading room, a low wooden study desk sat in the midday light. On its smooth surface, three yellow pencils lay rolling slightly apart near an open notebook. I climbed onto the bench and leaned forward. With both hands, I nudged the first pencil into the carved wooden groove near the edge. I rolled the second and third ones right beside it, leaving an even space between each sharpened tip. All three erasers now form a clean, straight row. I sat down beside them to watch the quiet room.
