Grid of Spices
I walked past the dining table and into the kitchen. On the counter stood a tiered spice rack made of metal wire, divided into neat, square compartments. I stood still at the base for a long time, looking up at each framed space. Then I climbed slowly onto the lower shelf. Between two glass jars of dried herbs, there was just enough room to sit. My plush shoulders leaned against the smooth, round glass. The wire grid beneath my feet felt cool and firm. I settled my paws on the front ledge, anchored and quiet, watching the morning light catch the tiny green flakes inside the jars.
