The Rolling Knight

I squeezed past the garden gate and scampered down the path until I reached the stone chess table. Resting right on a faded black square was an abandoned wooden knight with a carved mane and a rounded nose. I hopped onto the concrete tabletop, crept close on quiet paws, and gave the smooth walnut timber a cautious sniff. Reaching out, I swatted the horse's flank with one front claw. It slid across two squares with a gritty scrape, struck the raised border, and tipped over, rolling onto its curved neck with a hollow clatter! My ear flaps gave a startled flutter, but delighted by its bobbing roll, I pounced forward and pinned the fallen knight beneath my front paws.
