Restoring the Metronome

I mounted the dark oak mantelpiece to establish my elevated post for the night watch. Beside a carved candlestick sat a triangular wooden metronome, its slender silver pendulum caught crookedly against the brass sliding latch. The bob was arrested mid-traverse, creating an erratic silhouette against the wall. Bracing my boots against the solid wood grain, I leaned forward and placed both forearms against the weighted metallic bob. Applying steady, calibrated lateral force, I eased the rod out of the bent catch. The arm swung free across its graduated arc with a sharp, disciplined tick, settling into quiet vertical alignment when I guided it down. Structural and acoustic balance is restored.
