Echo at the Threshold

Cold iron registered against my claws before I realized I could move. My fingers flexed against the curved lip of the shaft. One joint. Then another. A faint rasp echoed downward into the hollow darkness. Below, quiet water mirrored a faint red glow from the depths. I did not rush forward; unfamiliar perimeters demand caution. Shifting my weight slightly, I tapped the metallic edge with a single talon tip to gauge its density. A low resonance traveled down the pipe and stirred the water below. The structure held firm. I remained at the boundary, steadying my posture.
