Night Grids on the Sidewalk

I walked down the exterior steps toward the evening street, following the soft glow of a sidewalk newspaper kiosk. Right against the stand's metal apron rested an unfolded urban transit pocket map someone had dropped by a recycling bin. I crouched beside it, steadying the thick folded crease with both hands. The vibrant overlapping subway lines and clean typographic station callouts formed an intricate network across the semi-gloss paper. Using the tiny brass spoke nipple from my pocket, I slid it along the blue line to trace the transfer hubs. The tactile precision of public transit layout is simply remarkable under streetlights.
