A Matter of Equilibrium

I shifted my weight forward onto the desk's edge. A wooden ruler rested half over the lip, cantilevered above the void. I approached in measured paces, planting my lower supports firmly with every step. With deliberate alignment, I swung my right side beam upward and brought the blunt tip down against the overhang. The wood dipped, shuddered, and rocked against the grain of the desk. I held the contact steady until the vibration ceased, feeling the pivot point hold firm beneath our combined pressure.
