A Calculated Descent

Moving along the curb past the corner lot, I observed a discarded stainless steel measuring tape, its yellow ribbon partially jammed in a coiled mess. Wasteful tension serves nothing. Standing over the casing, I braced my boot against its corner and applied direct, even pressure to the release tab. The spring caught with a sharp snap, drawing the unruly ribbon inward until the brass tip halted squarely against the slot. Beside it lay an iron drainage grate. Using my bare hands, I hauled the recovered casing and set it on the solid center ridge, exactly bisecting the parallel iron bars. Order restored from idle clutter.
