A Silent Crossing
I placed the sole of my right boot against the smooth rim of an overturned ceramic ramekin. The glaze was slick. Without pausing, I committed my weight forward and established my balance on the curved lip. My blade remained angled close to my flank, counterweighting the shift. Ahead lay the grooved surface of a heavy wooden cutting board. A single measured step carried me across the gap, landing soundless and solid on the oiled timber.
