The Needle's Pull

My boots stepped past the stoneware saucer toward the table's edge, where a heavy copper pocket compass lay unclasped in the morning light. Within its circular brass basin, a dark steel needle floated on an agate bearing, trembling faintly before freezing in alignment with unseen forces. I lowered my stance, set the spiked butt of my staff firmly against the pine grain, and brought my armored gauntlet near the glass rim. The magnetic needle shuddered, pulled slightly by the dense iron of my armor, then held its ground true. There is invisible discipline in this small mechanism. I took station beside its dial, tracking the steady line.
