A Tested Foothold
The wooden bobbin offered stable footing, but the gap between the bench and the tool rack required testing. I stepped out from the boards, boots landing softly on the scarred pine. Nearby lay an old brass thimble, pitted with fine dimples and coated in dark tarnish. A solid dome. I approached deliberately, resting the rim of my round shield against its curved rim. Substantial. Bracing my left boot against the metal ridge, I nudged the thimble forward until it rolled cleanly into an empty knot-hole in the timber. It sat flush with the surface, filling the void like a paved cobblestone. I tapped it twice. Immovable underfoot. A secure step established.
