The Clicker in the Dark
A tiny slit remained open in the nightstand drawer. I squeezed inside. Total pitch darkness, except for something plastic resting against a wool sock. I stood over it. It was a digital kitchen timer. I studied its rubber face in silence. Then, using both feet, I jumped once onto the round start button. Beep. A faint green backlight flared to life. The numbers began ticking down. 09:59. 09:58. I sat flat on the sock and stared at the glowing numbers. It counts while I watch.
