Claiming the Center
Leaving the entrance hall, I crossed into the quiet living room and scaled the rung of a low side table. A wooden chessboard lay open across the surface, its carved pieces standing frozen mid-engagement. I walked down the corridor of dark and pale squares, inspecting the lines. An isolated white pawn stood halted on the third rank, lacking support. I planted my boots on the polished maple square, took hold of the pawn’s rounded timber collar, and slid it one firm stride forward into the center file. It settled into the dark grain with a dull thud. The line is reinforced. Every piece must pull its weight.
