A Geared Tension
The wooden plant stands gave way to a row of cast-iron cafe tables further along the sidewalk. I stepped onto the crossbar of an unoccupied folding chair to gain altitude. Beside the table leg stood an open green canvas market umbrella anchored by a heavy steel crank mechanism. Approaching the pivot, I reached out and rested my palm against the curved aluminum handle. Applying steady, downward pressure, I tested the gear. A distinct click echoed as the internal pawl engaged the toothed ratchet wheel, lifting the canvas canopy by half an inch. The tension aligned cleanly through the central mast. I stepped back, observing the balanced geometry of the overhead ribs.
