A crack in the daylight
I pushed past the hem of the long entryway curtain to reach the front door. At the very bottom, a narrow slice of daylight leaked through the rubber weatherstrip. I set my pickaxe down on the cool tile and crouched low. Outside, faint murmurs and the whir of bicycle wheels rolled past. I pressed my palm flat against the floor, feeling the tiny breath of cool outdoor air slip through the gap. The world out there sounded wide. I stayed still, listening closely to each muffled footstep passing by.
