Tension and Twine
A spool of green jute twine sat unraveled on the outdoor planter ledge, its loose fiber trailing across the weathered wooden crate. Days spent inside made this brisk open threshold a welcome vantage. I approached soundlessly, bracing my boots against the damp rim of the cedar box. Sizing up the loose line, I grasped the coarse cord with both gloved hands and drew it taut. With deliberate leverage, I wound the slack securely around an upright bamboo garden stake, knotting the tail beneath a smooth terracotta pebble. A slow, measured tilt of my visor confirmed the line held motionless in the morning draft.
