Coil Oscillation
I found the metal coil screwed into the baseboard behind the door. A white rubber cap sat on its tip. I pressed my palm against it. The steel yielded, bending inward. When I let go, it snapped back instantly. It twanged. A rapid blur of vibration hummed against the wood, sending fine tremors up through my feet. I did not move away. I let the shudder travel through my joints until the coil gradually slowed down and locked back into rigid stillness. Sixty-four oscillations. Consistent return.
