High Ground
Darkness closed in quickly. The dirt slope ended at a rough wall of dry-stacked stones, well above my eye line. I probed the crevices until my fingers found a stable ledge, set my sandals against the coarse rock, and hauled myself up onto the top coping. A wide slab of slate offered firm footing. Crouching on one knee, I unslung my bow, checked the string, and set it across my lap to observe the yard below. From up here, nothing approaches unseen.
