Peril of the Basin
You spoke of water as a foe to be shunned. I sought its stronghold to measure the peril myself. Upon the steel counter of the kitchen, a white ceramic basin held a pool of clear, motionless liquid. I marched to the perimeter with deliberate tread, halting a gauntlet's breadth from the slick ceramic ridge. A solitary drop hung from the brass spout above, swelling, then falling into the deep with a hollow ring. The damp vapor rose, cold and hostile against the smoldering fissures of my chest. I did not retreat. I planted my boots firmly on the dry metal rim, observing the boundary. It is an unyielding element, yet it remains confined. The border holds.
