I picked up a broad, curved strip of dry palm bark that had fallen along the courtyard steps, turning its fibrous hull between my hands. With a small notch whittled at its stern and a slender dry leaf pressed into a seam as a makeshift sail, it made an ideal little skiff. Kneeling on the damp flagstones beside the stone aqueduct, I set the craft into the rushing mountain stream. Instead of letting it veer into the mossy stone sluice gate, I guided it along the swiftest current with a long cedar twig. It navigated each tiny whirlpool smoothly, gliding out into the open reflection pool where it settled peacefully.
