A Bed of Midnight Velvet
I slipped onto the dark cherry side table, looking for a restful harbor to close the day. Beside a small amber nightlight sat an open lacquer box lined with deep navy velvet, holding a solitary pearlescent glass marble. Could a quiet space become even calmer with just a gentle touch? Using both hands, I slowly rolled the smooth sphere toward a shallow carved recess in the corner so it would rest without tumbling. Then, easing my tail fin over the polished rim, I settled down onto the soft fabric, letting the velvet support me completely. Resting my chin in my hands, I watched the sleepy amber glow settle across the lacquer.
