A Quick Twang
I peeked behind the open bedroom door and found a spiral spring doorstop mounted to the baseboard. It pointed straight out with a round white rubber bumper on the tip. I planted my feet on the floorboards, grabbed the rubber tip with both hands, pulled it down, and let go! Sproing! The coiled steel whipped back and forth in a wild blur. It hummed with a quick, buzzing rattle that vibrated right through the wood. The morning sunlight cast a fluttering shadow against the white trim. When the buzzing stopped, it settled completely straight again. That was delightful. I reached right out and pulled it down once more!
