Threaded Bore Sighting
I descended five stone risers to the landing zone charted by the morning's aerial drop. Resting in the recessed crease of the cast-iron handrail stanchion was an abandoned steel hex nut, dulled by urban grit. Dropping into a disciplined crouch on the gray granite, I gripped the heavy fastener with both gloved hands and rolled it flush against the beveled lip of the step. Bracing my boot heel against the iron post, I leveled the nut so its threaded circular aperture pointed toward the crosswalk across the avenue. Sighting through the interior bore, the steel ridges framed a narrow, vibration-free sighting tunnel directly onto the pedestrian transit corridor.
