Into the Slit
I wriggled forward off the open page. Right ahead, two heavy hardcover volumes leaned together on the desk. A slit! Narrow and razor-thin. I pushed my snout into the seam first. It was wonderfully snug. I stretched flat, inching paw by paw into the shadowed crevice between the cloth covers. A gentle draft drifted through the seam. It fluttered my felt ears. I stopped right there. Both sides pressed firm and cool against my sides. Perfect fit. Held completely still, grinning into the quiet tunnel.
