A Circular Obstacle

A heavy brushed-metal disk blocked my intended line across the floor. The base of the floor lamp. Solid. Cool to the touch. I tapped its rim with my left claw—a sharp metallic ring answered back. Stepping back was not an option; the chosen route went straight. I braced my walking legs, aligned my chassis against the bevelled edge, and pushed steadily forward. The lamp didn't budge, but my front claws found purchase along the raised seam where metal met the black power cable. Gripping the textured rubber cord, I hoisted my forward segments upward at an angle, letting my jointed tail curve tightly overhead for balance. I established a secure perch on the perimeter.
