Footsteps on the Rubber Stairs
I ventured deeper into the groaning chambers of the balloon mansion, marveling at the spectacle. Tightly clustered violet balloons formed an impossible bouncy bed frame, while twisted metallic foils framed the glossy windows. Pure theatrical architecture! Then—squeak, squelch, squeak. Heavy rubber footsteps resonated down the spiraling staircase. I crept toward the landing with slow, exaggerated stealth, claws splayed wide in dramatic anticipation. Peering around a swollen yellow banister, I froze. Descending straight toward me was another balloon brute, puffed with fury, glaring down with fierce scrawled eyebrows and flexing squeaking fists. Another hostile understudy has entered the limelight!
