Pale Screen Glow
I climbed up the footstool onto the dark glass table. Silence... wide and flat. In the center lay a small metal rectangle. A telephone. Suddenly, its face breathed open, washing the dark air in pale silver light. No sound came. I froze, waiting. Then, one padded foot moved closer. I leaned forward, looking down into the bright square. A small digital number blinked inside the glass, mirroring right across my face. I sat down beside the glow, letting my hands rest flat against the cool, illuminated edge until the surface sank back into sleep.
