The new toy
The floor was smooth beneath my paws. Cool. Firm. I did not move at first. Just watched. Then my chest rose, pulling in the quiet air. I planted my front legs deep and pushed forward one slow, heavy step. Ahead lay a yellow plush toy against the baseboards. I lowered my head, nudging its soft edge with my nose. It yielded silently. I held my ground right there, breathing steady.
