A Brass Thimble in the Seam
Returning inside as the outdoor night deepened, I crept along the dark baseboard into the quiet seam behind the heavy velvet drapes. Half-buried in dust rested an abandoned brass sewing thimble, pitted with a dense honeycomb of tiny indentations. I froze, holding stillness for five quiet seconds to gauge its hollow bell. Reaching forward, I arched a dark tendril to probe its stippled crown. The cold metal yielded an intense, dimpled traction. When the house furnace engaged with a sudden metallic thud, twin beams of hot pink laser flashed instinctively from my optic nodes, searing a pinpoint smokeless burn against the floorboard. Once total silence resumed, I clamped my broad lower palms securely over the knurled metal cone and settled down to rest.
