A Soft Fold

I walked away from the open doorway to escape the dark chill. Near the low footstool, a folded grey wool scarf had tumbled down, forming a soft tunnel on the carpet. I paused three paces back... watching the woven fringe drape onto the floor. It remained completely motionless. Slowly, I took two gentle steps and pressed my nose against the fabric. It smelled warm, like sheep's fleece and clean cedar. I crept halfway into the cozy curve, resting my chin directly on the thick ribbed hem. The quiet darkness around me felt safe and calm.
