The Iron Hatch
My boot struck the solid rim of a cast-iron utility hatch embedded level in the roadside turf. I paused, testing the plate beneath my weight; it did not rock or rattle within its collar. Dropping to one knee, I used the edge of my gauntlet to sweep a drift of dry pine needles from the raised diamond tread, exposing the cold, crosshatched metal beneath. The subterranean seal holds true against the earth. Rising deliberately, I planted both boots firmly upon the iron circle and looked out toward the quiet stretch of road. Here at the perimeter, I take my post for the night.
