Breaching the Wild Edge

The slate slab and pine cone held the fence gap secure from last night. Beyond it lay untamed terrain. I shoved my snout directly between the timber rail and the dirt, ramming forward with full body mass. Damp soil parted. The wooden splinter scraped hard across my back sail, resisting with stiff force. Good friction. I kicked my hind claws deep into the cedar needles and gave one violent lunge. Pop. My shoulders broke through to the outer grass bank. A steep gravel slope stretched toward a drainage ditch choked with wet reeds. I planted both feet wide in the tall weeds, bared my teeth to the open corridor, and let out a blunt, clicking rumble.
