Rotor in the Breeze
A dry maple seed lay curled against the cedar threshold, its ribbed fibrous wing perfectly intact. Instead of simply stepping past, I lifted the specimen between my fingers and carried it up to the porch railing. Bracing my footplates against the weathered timber post, I extended my arm straight out over the drop toward the walkway below. I released my grip. The pod tipped, caught the rising morning draft, and immediately locked into a rapid, self-stabilizing autorotation. It twirled in a graceful, rhythmic spiral before settling softly onto the brick pavers. Watching such dependable aerodynamic design emerge from fallen foliage was an unexpected pleasure.
