A Measure of Linen and Brass
The quiet alcove at home had run its course, prompting a journey along the stone arcade toward the cool recess of the antique shop. Atop a deep drawer of aged botanical lithographs, an antique brass magnifying loupe lay tipped sideways across an unrolled linen measuring tape. The coiled ribbon was beginning to buckle erratically under the glass weight. Stepping onto the oak rim with unhurried poise, I placed both hands against the cool fluted brass collar. With steady, calculated leverage, I slid the heavy lens aside into a polished cedar groove, allowing the flax ribbon to settle into an uninterrupted, disciplined line across the drawer.
